STEP 1

Energy Gauge Rater Training 3

Home energy ratings provide a standardized measure of energy costs and efficiency. This course is the first in a series of three training classes and is the beginning of your journey to becoming a national HERS Rater.  This first course introduces you to the RESNET National Standards, and to the EnergyGauge USA software for preparing a rating file for new construction.

STEP 2

Energy Gauge Rater Training 2

The second in the series of three classes concentrates on the field assessment that accompanies a confirmed rating. This class employs classroom lecture time as well as hands-on laboratory and field training. The student will be required to produce a rating file based on the field assessment they have performed.

STEP 3

Energy Gauge Rater Training 1: HERS Rater

This is the third and final step required to become a certified HERS Rater. This is an extremely intense training class that uses classroom lecture and simulations, hands-on performance testing, and field training. You will be required to complete a HERS rating based on the series of the three trainings. This four-day training class completes the RESNET training requirement. The fifth day is dedicated to testing required to move to the completion of probationary ratings.

Combustion Safety

This course will familiarize HERS Raters with the new RESNET Combustion Appliance Safety Testing protocols outlined in Chapter 8 of RESNET Standards.

FSEC requires a combustion performance exam in addition to the RESNET combustion safety requirements. The test will be performed at a real home which utilizes combustion appliances.  You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. See full description to schedule exam date and time.

Provisional Rating

As part of the FSEC Rater Agreement and the RESNET Standard a "probationary rater" must have at least two probationary ratings performed in the presence of a Quality Assurance Designee or Delegate. This includes the QA Designee (or Delegate) to supervise, on site, the probationary rating and to check the rater file input for errors.

Provisional Projected Rating from Plans

As part of the Rater Agreement and the RESNET Standard a "probationary rater" must do at least 5 probationary ratings, in which one can be from plans. The review of the plan, which is supplied to the student, will result in one of five probationary ratings.

Intro. to the Infrared Camera

An infrared camera can be a helpful tool in diagnosing a variety of problems. This course will introduce students to the basics of thermography as it applies to diagnosing building conditions.

Combustion Safety

This course will familiarize HERS Raters with the new RESNET Combustion Appliance Safety Testing protocols outlined in Chapter 8 of RESNET Standards.

Air Sealing Tech

Learn the basics of air leakage, tools, and materials used in attic preparation, as well as the trouble spots found repeatedly on a job site. There will be demos and hands-on experiences of proper attic preparation.

Dense-Pack Sidewall Insulation

Students will practice installing dense-pack insulation and explore the various inspection techniques available. Common pitfalls and installation techniques will be covered.

Advanced Pressure Diagnostics

This course will cover methods to reduce air leakage in floors, walls and ceilings adjacent to buffer zones (attic, crawlspace, attached garage) and also to determine if air-sealing is needed.

Diagnosing Moisture Problems

Learn how to avoid elevated indoor humidity and building moisture problems in hot and humid climates, including uncontrolled airflow, building pressures, ventilation, mold and mildew problems.

Residential Building Air Leakage [Blower Door] Testing

Learn how to perform residential building air leakage tests using a blower door in compliance with Florida Residential Energy Code.

Measurement and Verification of Continuous Whole-House Mechanical Ventilation Systems
